The main ingredient in this muscle and joint rub is cayenne. Its active component, capsaicin, sets off the release of the “substance P” from nerve cells and the inflammatory cells of the immune system.
The role of this compound is to help the body perceive pain and to stimulate the release of different cytokines to cause a healthy inflammatory reaction. Cayenne dilates the blood vessels, which helps the anti-inflammatory cells to reach the affected area.
When the compound P is released and subsequently depleted, which happens after the application of cayenne, it causes desensitization and the threshold of discomfort in that area increases. This means that the pain in the area is soothed and the healing is accelerated.
In spite of cayenne, this rub contains more beneficial natural ingredients which relax the painful and tired muscles, including:
Peppermint essential oil– The menthol in it soothes pain, relaxes the muscles, and cools the area. This is another common ingredient used for muscle pain as it will reduce pain and relax the muscles. It actually constricts the muscles and moves the blood along to remove waste.
Ginger– This spice has been traditionally used in the Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, due to its powerful anti-inflammatory and warming properties. It stimulates blood flow, hence also bringing new immune cells that push along old blood which contain the inflammatory cells from the painful area.
Coconut oil– It nourishes the skin, and uses strong pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.

Now, here is how to prepare the cayenne muscle and joint rub:
- 2 teaspoons organic Cayenne powder
- 1 teaspoon organic ginger powder
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon organic Turmeric powder
- ¼ cup beeswax (grated; it will help the melting process).
- 10 drops of peppermint essential oil.
- ¼ cup raw cocoa butter.
Get a Pyrex glass container, mix the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and beeswax in it, and place it into a saucepan with 2-3 inches of water. Then, let the water to simmer, by stirring frequently, until the ingredients are melted totally. Next, add the cayenne, turmeric and ginger powder, and stir for a minute. Remove the mixture from heat, add the peppermint essential oil, and move it into a glass jar. Leave it to cool, then close the cover.
It would be best to keep the rub in the fridge for as much as 6-8 weeks, as it does not contain any preservatives. The rub can be applied liberally to the affected areas, and after you apply it, make sure to wash the hands, as the cayenne and peppermint essential oils are rather strong, while the turmeric might leave yellow stains on the skin.
In spite of using this rub, you should also:
- Drink a lot of water, and water carries the blood around the body. The blood contains immune cells that lower inflammation. You need to consume half your body weight in ounces of water daily.
- You need to rest the painful area in order to allow it to heal.
- To relieve arthritis pain, you should take Turmeric pills, 1500mg/day, because research has revealed that they offer the same effects as NSAIDs in easing pain in people with knee osteoarthritis, and do not cause their adverse effects.
